yankees Sweep boston - Are back in the Race

Click here to follow A-Rod's assault on the American League Home run Record

Ever since Alex Rodriguez was sent for an MRI on his injured ankle prior to last Thursday's game against the Seattle Mariners he has done nothing but hit - home runs, that is.

He started his current hot streak a couple of games before that but on Thursday he became the first Yankee in 30 years to hit two home runs in one inning. A-Rod led off the seventh inning with a game-tying shot and then capped the 8-run fram with a two run blast.

All told, including the first tree inning of Sunday's game, the Yankee third baseman has hit 6 home runs in the last four games. He has set a record for AL third basemen and is on pace to reach his career high of 57.

The Yankees have now increased their lead over Detroit to three games and four over Seattle. If the starting pitching can get healthy, the young players can step up and the Yankees can go into Boston and sweep then the Division title is still within reach.

Andy Pettitte has been the mainstay of the rotation and is 9-2 with a 3.13 ERA in 12 starts since the All-Star break, winning more games than any pitcher in the majors over that span. Pettitte's win last night in Kansas City was his 199th overall and 162nd as a Yankee, tying Herb Pennock for seventh place on the all-time list.

Chien-Ming Wang, Sunday's starter, is 17-6 after missing the first month of the season. He should definitely be considered when the CY Young Award votes are cast.
